Johannesburg – Three suspects were fatally wounded in a high-speed chase and shootout with the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Team (TOMS) early on Thursday during a hijacking, attempted murder, and kidnapping incident in Crystal Park, Benoni.
The female victim escaped unharmed.
According to a statement by the South African Police Service (SAPS), Hawks members received information about suspects allegedly involved in hijackings and kidnappings along Elm Road in Crystal Park and began a tactical patrol in the area.
“Around 20:30, the Hawks members from TOMS spotted the described vehicle, a silver-grey Opel Astra, just after they pulled a female victim out of her Fiat and bundled her into their getaway vehicle,” the statement said.
A high-speed chase ensued after the suspects opened fire on the police. The suspects’ vehicle collided with a side barrier and ended up in an embankment.
“In the aftermath, three suspects were fatally wounded and the victim rescued with no injuries,” SAPS confirmed.
Two firearms and some of the victim’s belongings were recovered from the suspects’ vehicle.
The Hawks said the operation highlighted the unit’s readiness to respond to violent crime and ensure public safety.
“The members tactically patrolled the road,” the statement added, emphasizing the careful coordination that led to the safe rescue of the victim.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, including the identities of the deceased suspects, and urge residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.
