Johannesburg — Four suspects linked to a string of business robberies, including a recent cellphone shop heist in Actonville, were arrested following a coordinated operation by law enforcement agencies in Ekurhuleni on Tuesday.
Three firearms and dozens of rounds of ammunition were also recovered.
The arrests followed intelligence received by officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Intervention Unit, K9 Unit and Bronberg Special Operations, working alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Gauteng Traffic Police.
According to police, officers identified a white Suzuki believed to have been used in the robberies and stopped the vehicle on Voortrekker Road in Benoni. Three male suspects were found inside, along with two bags containing various cellphones believed to be stolen.
“The vehicle matched the description provided in information relating to multiple business robberies, including a recent cellphone shop robbery in Actonville,” an EMPD spokesperson said.

“When officers searched the car, they found a number of cellphones suspected to be stolen.”
The suspects later led officers to the Daveyton Hostel, where a fourth suspect was arrested. A search of the premises resulted in the discovery of three firearms — two of which were unlicensed — while one had its serial number defaced. Police also recovered 39 rounds of live ammunition.
“The recovery of these firearms is a significant breakthrough and will assist in ongoing investigations linked to business robberies in the area,” the spokesperson added.
All four suspects were detained at the Benoni and Daveyton police stations. They face charges of business robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of stolen property.
Police said the suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
