Cape Town – A shooting incident at the Booysens Magistrates’ Court left two people dead and three others injured on Tuesday, 20 January 2026, authorities confirmed.
The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Development expressed grave concern over the incident in a media statement.
“The incident is still active, and law enforcement agencies are attending to the situation,” the statement read.
According to the Ministry, Deputy Minister Andries Nel is scheduled to visit the scene to assess the situation, while officials await further verified information from law enforcement and court management.
Police sources told IOL that the attack took place outside the court building and involved multiple gunmen. “At this stage, it has been reported that five people were shot, with two fatalities,” the Ministry said, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as the shooting unfolded. One bystander, who asked not to be named, told IOL, “It happened so quickly. People were running everywhere, and it was terrifying to see.”
The Gauteng Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and all law enforcement resources have been deployed to secure the area. Spokesperson Captain Mathe Maema said, “We are treating this as a priority. Our officers are on site, and we are following all leads to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended.”
The Ministry also emphasised its commitment to the safety of court personnel and visitors. “The Ministry condemns this incident and will work with the relevant security and law enforcement authorities to ensure that all necessary measures are implemented to safeguard court users and personnel,” the statement added.
As the investigation continues, the Ministry assured the public that further updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
