Polokwane – A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder following a shooting during a funeral gathering in Ga-Molepo, Laastehoop, within the Mankweng policing precinct, Limpopo police confirmed.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 24 May 2025.
Officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a shooting at the funeral. Upon arrival, they were informed that the male victim had already been rushed to a local hospital after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.
“During the crime scene investigation, police recovered, several spent cartridges at the scene. The firearm used in the shooting was also recovered.
“The 30-year-old male suspect was arrested at the scene and has been charged with attempted murder. The motive for the shooting incident remains unknown at this stage, and police investigations are ongoing,” Mashaba said.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the act, calling it a senseless use of violence, particularly at a community event meant for mourning and remembrance.
“We cannot tolerate such senseless acts of violence, especially during times when families and communities come together to pay their last respects to the deceased. We call on community members to find peaceful ways to resolve their differences,” said Hadebe.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 May 2025.
