Durban – An 18-year-old Grade 10 learner narrowly escaped an attempted armed robbery in Verulam’s central business district in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, according to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).
The teenager, who attends a school in Ndwedwe, was walking along Todd Street when he was confronted by four suspects dressed in school uniforms.
“Reaction Officers were dispatched and on arrival, interviewed the victim who stated that he was walking along Todd Street in the Verulam CBD when he was approached by four males dressed in school uniforms,” RUSA said in a statement.
According to the report, one of the suspects was armed.
“One of the suspects produced a firearm and attempted to rob him of his cellphone,” the statement said.
The teenager refused to hand over his belongings and managed to flee the scene.
“The teenager refused to hand over the device and fled to safety. The suspects thereafter escaped on Wick Street in the Central Business District,” RUSA added.
Reaction officers conducted an extensive search of the area following the incident, but no arrests have been made.
“No injuries were reported,” the statement confirmed.
Authorities have not yet identified the suspects, and investigations into the attempted robbery are ongoing.
