Grade 10 learner allegedly stabs schoolmate to death at Gauteng school

Cape Town – A 16-year-old Grade 9 pupil has died after he was allegedly stabbed by another learner during an altercation at a school in Khutsong, Carletonville, Gauteng.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 12 March, at Badirile Secondary School, where a confrontation between two pupils reportedly escalated into violence on the school grounds.

The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed that the learner was severely injured during the incident and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment. However, he later died from his injuries.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said early reports indicate that the incident began as an argument between two pupils.

“Preliminary reports indicate an altercation occurred between two pupils on school grounds on Thursday morning, during which a 17-year-old Grade 10 boy allegedly stabbed a Grade 9 pupil, causing severe injuries,” Mabona said.

The Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, expressed sadness over the death of the learner and conveyed condolences to the affected family and the school community.

“We are devastated by this tragic loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased pupil and the Badirile Secondary School community,” Chiloane said.

The school has initiated internal disciplinary processes against the alleged perpetrator while police investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing.

Authorities have also indicated that support services will be provided to learners and educators affected by the incident, as officials urge communities and parents to work together with schools to curb violence among pupils.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
