Cape Town – Deputy Police Minister Dr Polly Boshielo has urged parents to stop protecting children involved in crime.
Speaking at the funeral of murder victim Olorato Mongale in Bloemfontein on Sunday, she revealed that the parents of suspect Philangenkosi Makhanya were arrested for warning him about a police investigation.
“The investigation began at a lodge in Kew, Johannesburg where they booked a room. The team then proceeded to KZN where they first picked up the vw polo vehicle at a panel beater workshop in Phoenix.
“This vehicle was found with traces of blood, our forensic experts are still analysing this blood sample. We thereafter proceeded to the house of Philangenkosi Makhanya where we found his parents. We interviewed them and the father led us to the house of Philangenkosi, but when we got there he had unfortunately already left,” Boshielo said.

“It has now come to light that Pilangenkosi is the JOHN that we had been looking for.
“Indeed, the teams working on this case did not give up, they worked on the case up until Philangenkosi Makhanya was traced to a block of apartments in Amanzimtoti on Friday morning, and when police announced their arrival, he shot at them and police had no choice but to return fire. He was declared deceased at the scene. In his possession, police found more than 27 ID smart cards belonging to various men and about 20 cellphones.”
Boshielo also stated that police are still searching for Bongani Mthimkulu, believed to have been working with Makhanya in a syndicate targeting women in malls nationwide.
She appealed for Mthimkulu to surrender to authorities.
