Johannesburg – Gauteng residents have been urged to remain vigilant as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a warning for severe thunderstorms across most parts of the province.
The storms, driven by a strong cut-off low-pressure system moving over the region, are expected to bring very cold temperatures, hail, strong winds, and rainfall of up to 15–20mm per hour. Localised flooding, especially in low-lying areas, is a major concern.
Emergency services in both Johannesburg and Tshwane are on high alert for any weather-related incidents.
City of Tshwane spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni confirmed that severe thundershowers are likely, with a 60% chance of rain in Tshwane and maximum temperatures expected to remain low.
A Cut-off-low is expected to result in cloudy and cold conditions over the central & eastern parts of the country between Wednesday and Thursday, 6-7 August 2025, with isolated to scattered showers & thundershowers expected over Gauteng, Free State, Mpumalanga, North West & KZN. pic.twitter.com/U8riRrn9jN

He also warned of potential small hail and wind damage, urging communities to remain alert following a yellow Level 3 warning issued by SAWS.
In Johannesburg, Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi advised residents to take caution when using heating devices such as heaters, braziers, paraffin stoves, and candles.
He emphasised the risk of fires caused by unattended heating sources and assured the public that all seven city regions are being closely monitored.
