Polokwane – Limpopo police have opened a case of culpable homicide after a three-year-old girl was found dead inside a locked car at the Seshego Hospital premises on Monday afternoon.
According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, officers were called to the hospital at about 15:10 following reports of a child who had been left inside a parked vehicle.
“On arrival, police found a doctor who pointed out a blue Toyota Corolla Cross parked in the hospital yard,” said Ledwaba.
“We were informed that a three-year-old baby girl was allegedly found locked inside the motor vehicle with the windows closed while seated at the back seat.”

Ledwaba said the toddler was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Reports suggest that the medical practitioner pronounced the child dead after she succumbed to the heat and lack of oxygen while locked inside the vehicle,” he added.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the child’s mother, who works at the hospital, allegedly left her daughter in the vehicle earlier that morning.
“It is believed that at about 07:00, the deceased was left by her mother inside the motor vehicle when she rushed for a handing-over session at the medical facility and seemingly forgot about her in the car,” said Ledwaba.
A postmortem will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Police investigations are ongoing.
