Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal – Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) responded to a crash at Tea Estate in Inanda at 17:33 on Saturday, where two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collided.
One person, later identified as a police sergeant stationed at King Shaka International Airport (KSIA), was found deceased in full police uniform. Occupants of the second vehicle sustained injuries and were treated on the scene.
According to witnesses, prior to the arrival of first responders, a large crowd gathered around the vehicles. Two Pakistani nationals were allegedly seen reaching into the officer’s vehicle and walking away with a white VW Caddy.
It is believed they stole the deceased officer’s State Beretta 92FS pistol (serial number P89936Z) and 30 rounds of 9mm ammunition while he remained in the driver’s seat. Authorities have not confirmed whether the suspects left before officers arrived.
RUSA officers, following standard protocol, recorded the incident using vehicle dashcams and body-worn cameras. The footage captured all vehicles leaving the scene, as well as bystanders present at the time.
The video evidence will be handed over to detectives investigating the theft of the firearm.
No arrests have been reported, and authorities have urged anyone with additional information to come forward.
