Farm worker killed after child, 11, discharges father’s firearm

Polokwane – Limpopo police have launched a full investigation after an 11-year-old boy allegedly shot and killed a farm worker while trying to shoot guinea fowls on a farm in Thabazimbi on Saturday morning.

According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the tragic incident occurred at around 05:45.

“Police were called to the scene after reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of an African male, estimated to be in his thirties, lying on his side with a bullet wound to the upper left chest,” said Colonel Ledwaba.

Emergency medical services were summoned, but the victim was declared dead at the scene.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the boy was allegedly shooting at guinea fowls on the farm when he accidentally discharged the firearm, fatally wounding a farm worker,” Ledwaba explained.

Police have since arrested the boy’s 43-year-old father, who now faces a charge of negligent handling of a firearm. The weapon and cartridge used in the incident have been confiscated for forensic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

“Both the child, in terms of the Child Justice Act, and his father are expected to appear before the Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 13 October 2025,” Colonel Ledwaba confirmed.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe expressed deep concern over the incident, calling for responsible firearm ownership.

“This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder that firearms must be handled with the utmost care and stored securely at all times,” said Hadebe.

“Parents and guardians must ensure that children do not have access to firearms under any circumstances.”

Police investigations are continuing.
