Cape Town – Four people appeared in the Beaufort West Magistrate’s Court this week after police seized a large consignment of drugs estimated to be worth about R1.3 million during a targeted operation along the N1 highway.
According to Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies, officers acted on information received from members of the public, which led to the interception of a truck near the industrial area of Beaufort West on Monday, February 2.
“On Monday, February 2, at about 11 am, Central Karoo K9, Flying Squad, and Provincial Organised Crime Investigators (narcotics) responded to information from the public when they intercepted a truck along the N1 highway at the industrial area in Beaufort West,” Spies said.
A search of the vehicle uncovered 53 bags of dagga, prompting the immediate arrest of the two occupants on charges of dealing in drugs.
The investigation did not end there. Spies explained that the following day police located additional drugs at a house in Stoltzhoekweg and found two bags of dagga concealed in the back of a Mazda.
“The members proceeded with a search of the vehicle and found two bags of dagga concealed in the back. Police confiscated the drugs and arrested two suspects aged 30 and 58, a father and son,” he said. All four were then brought before the magistrate and remanded in custody pending a formal bail application scheduled for February 10.
Western Cape police management publicly commended the officers involved in the Beaufort West arrests for their vigilance and intelligence-led work, highlighting that community information can be instrumental in targeting organised crime before contraband reaches the streets.
