Cape Town – Police in Rustenburg have launched an intensive manhunt following the fatal shooting of an elderly couple in the parking lot of a shopping centre on Saturday afternoon, 14 June 2025.
According to North West police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh, the brutal incident occurred after a confrontation between the couple and the occupants of a white Kia Rio with no number plates.
The assailants opened fire, killing both victims at the scene.
“Preliminary reports suggest that the couple was fatally shot at after a confrontation ensued with the occupants of a white Kia Rio without number plates. Paramedics declared both victims dead on the scene.
“The motive of the incident is yet to be determined,” Myburgh said.
Investigations are ongoing.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, condemned the daylight killings in the strongest terms, labelling the act as “senseless, gratuitous violence.”
“This cannot and should not go unpunished,” said Asaneng. “I am calling upon the perpetrator or perpetrators to listen to their conscience and hand themselves in before they are tracked down. Our detectives and tracking team will not rest until they are brought to justice.”
The suspects are considered armed and dangerous. Police are appealing to the public, including relatives and acquaintances of the suspects, to come forward with any information that may assist in the investigation.
“As the saying goes,” added Asaneng, “the world will not be destroyed by those who do evil but by those who idly sit, watch, and do nothing”.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Lieutenant Colonel Mainganyo Nathaniël Phatsoane on 082 373 9571 or Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Murunwa on 082 772 599.
Police continue to monitor developments and are urging the community to remain vigilant.
