Plettenberg Bay – Police in the Western Cape are investigating a double murder following the brutal killing of an elderly couple on a farm in Glen Loerie, The Crags.
According to the South African Police Service, the bodies of a 71-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man were discovered at a property linked to a vehicle flagged by security systems on Wednesday evening.
“Detectives in Plettenberg Bay are investigating a double murder following the discovery of an elderly couple who were fatally attacked on a farm in Glen Loerie, The Crags,” police said in a statement.
Preliminary reports indicate that a Mercedes-Benz was captured by a licence plate recognition camera travelling at high speed along the R339 towards Uniondale at about 18:50.
The vehicle was subsequently flagged on a local security WhatsApp group, prompting a police response.
“Police members responded to the registered address linked to the vehicle, where they discovered the bodies of a 71-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man. Both victims sustained multiple injuries,” SAPS said.
A coordinated operation involving police and community safety structures led to the pursuit of the vehicle, which later overturned near Uniondale. The driver fled the scene on foot but was apprehended shortly afterwards.
“The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter,” police confirmed.
A 34-year-old suspect from The Crags has been arrested and is currently being detained in Uniondale. He is expected to appear in court once formally charged.
Crime scene experts have processed both the farm and the crash site as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities say the motive for the attack remains unclear.
“The motive for the attack remains the subject of further investigation,” SAPS said.
Police have urged anyone with information to come forward, appealing to the public to contact Crime Stop or use the MySAPS mobile application.
