Cape Town – Gauteng police have arrested four suspects, including a Sandton businessman, in connection with the 2022 murder of popular DJ Oupa John Sefoka, known as DJ Sumbody.
The arrests, made during a Monday operation, include three alleged hitmen and one alleged mastermind behind the murder.
The suspects, aged between 45 and 60, face multiple charges, including three counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the killings of DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards.
“Gauteng organised crime detectives worked on the case and later roped in the Saps Political Killings Task Team to assist. The arrests were all effected in Gauteng on Monday afternoon, and three of the suspects are believed to be hitmen, and one is believed to have ordered the hit on the DJ,” police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said.
Police recovered the weapon believed to have been used in the crime, which has been linked to other murders.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 22 July 2025.
Mathe said: “This is a significant breakthrough that would hopefully provide closure to the families involved. This is one of those complex cases that our teams needed to take time in ensuring thorough investigation, so that we could bring a strong case before court.”
The SAPS National Commissioner hailed the arrests as a major breakthrough, crediting the Political Killings Task Team and Gauteng Organised Crime Detectives for their efforts.
DJ Sumbody was shot dead in Woodmead on 20 November 2022, just hours before he was scheduled to host his annual all-white picnic event.
His death followed a series of high-profile losses in the South African entertainment industry, including DJs Dimplez and Citi Lyts, and rapper Riky Rick
