Vryburg – A 39-year-old man has died following an alleged attack by two pitbull dogs at a residential property in Vryburg, North West, on Thursday, 01 January 2026.
Police reported that they were alerted to the incident after receiving an inquest report from a local hospital. Upon arrival, officers were directed to a surgical ward, where they found the man lying on a bed with no signs of life.
“The deceased sustained multiple wounds and scratches on both his hands and legs, which are consistent with dog bites,” said a spokesperson for the Vryburg Police.
Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) transported the man to the hospital at approximately 02:30 on Thursday, 01 January. He passed away the following evening, on Friday, 02 January 2026.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the man, believed to be a Pakistani national, was renting a room at the property where the attack occurred. Authorities are also looking into reports that the dogs had allegedly attacked other tenants in the past.
“A case relating to previous attacks involving these dogs is pending before the Vryburg Magistrates’ Court and is scheduled to be heard in February,” the police spokesperson added.
Following consultations with the owner, the two pitbulls were euthanised on Saturday, 03 January 2026. No arrests have been made, and the incident remains under investigation.
Police have opened an inquest to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the attack.
“The safety of residents and tenants is our priority, and we are committed to thoroughly investigating this tragic incident,” the spokesperson said.
