Durban – Four suspects wanted for a string of serious and violent crimes were shot and killed during a shootout with police in Adams Mission, south of Durban, on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the incident occurred during an intelligence-driven operation targeting criminals linked to ongoing violent crime in the Umbumbulu area and surrounding communities.

According to police, officers had been tracking the suspects — who were linked to armed robberies, house robberies, carjackings and kidnappings — for some time before the operation. During the operation, police spotted a vehicle matching the description of one allegedly used by the suspects in their criminal activities and began following it.

Police said the suspects opened fire when officers caught up with them.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said: “Police caught up with the suspects on Sheleni Road, and during the confrontation, a shoot-out ensued. After the shoot-out, four suspects were found to have sustained fatal gunshot wounds.”

Police added that the suspects had been using the vehicle to terrorise communities through violent crimes. Netshiunda said the suspects were linked to armed robberies, house robberies, carjackings and kidnappings.

One suspect managed to escape during the shootout, and a manhunt has been launched to locate him. Police also recovered firearms at the scene, which will undergo ballistic testing as part of the investigation.

No police officers were injured during the incident. Authorities said investigations into the shooting are continuing as part of broader efforts to combat violent crime in KwaZulu-Natal.
