Johannesburg – Four suspected house robbers were shot and killed in a gun battle with police on the N14 highway near Pretoria on Thursday afternoon.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, members of the Gauteng Highway Patrol, working with private security officials, were acting on Crime Intelligence information when they identified a vehicle linked to a spate of robberies in Tshwane South and Johannesburg North suburbs.
At around 15:00, officers spotted the white Hyundai sedan on the R55 in Centurion and attempted to pull it over. The suspects sped off, sparking a high-speed chase.

“The Gauteng Traffic Air Wing was called for aerial surveillance support. The suspects took the N14 on-ramp towards Pretoria and when police closed in, they started shooting at officers. Police retaliated, fatally shooting all four occupants,” said Muridili.
A search of the vehicle uncovered three handguns, ammunition and housebreaking tools. Investigators also discovered the car had false registration plates and a fraudulent licence disc.
“Preliminary investigation has already linked the suspects to 18 house robberies,” Muridili confirmed.
The SAPS Forensic Crime Scene Management team and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) attended the scene.
