Durban – Law enforcement agencies will be out in full force at this year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July, with police confirming heightened security measures at Greyville Racecourse and surrounding areas ahead of the event on Saturday, 5 July 2025.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Carmen Rhynes said various SAPS units and security agencies will be deployed across the city as part of a coordinated operation to ensure safety and order during the annual horse racing spectacle.
“Planning between SAPS, event organisers and other security stakeholders has been ongoing for weeks,” Rhynes said. “A proactive approach, which has resulted in previous successful events, has been adopted again this year.”

Law enforcement officers will be stationed both inside and outside the racecourse, as well as around Durban’s central business district, to monitor the event and curb any possible disruptions. Road closures, visible policing and traffic control measures are part of the broader plan to manage the large influx of attendees.
Warning to spectators and motorists
Racegoers have been urged to behave responsibly, remain vigilant, and safeguard their belongings throughout the day.
“Those indulging in alcohol must be dropped off and picked up or use public transport. Anyone caught drinking and driving will be arrested,” said Rhynes.
She also warned attendees about criminals who may blend in with the crowd. “Do not leave valuables unattended.”
Prohibited items
Security officers will conduct searches at entry points, and several items will be strictly banned from the venue. These include:
-
Sharp instruments such as knives
-
Firearms
-
Glass bottles
-
Alcohol
All prohibited items will be confiscated on entry.
Traffic and parking advisory
With thousands expected to descend on Greyville, traffic in the vicinity is expected to be heavy. Rhynes advised the public to use alternative routes and make use of public transport wherever possible.
Key roads such as DLI Avenue, Avondale Road, Gladys Manzibuko Road, Mitchell Crescent, 5th and 6th Avenues, and Clarence Road will be affected. Avondale and Haden Roads will be closed, with limited access allowed for residents using side streets.
Motorists with pre-sold parking tickets for the golf course must access the area via DLI Avenue from the city side. Rhynes urged drivers to arrive early, lock their vehicles securely, and avoid leaving valuables in their cars.
“Do not hand your keys to strangers or unofficial car guards,” she added.
Public reassurance
Rhynes assured the public that law enforcement would maintain peace and stability throughout the event. “We want everyone to enjoy the festivities safely. Let’s make this year’s Durban July a memorable and incident-free celebration.”
The Hollywoodbets Durban July is one of the country’s biggest social and sporting events, drawing thousands of spectators, celebrities, and fashion enthusiasts each year.
