Johannesburg – More than 1 500 people were arrested across Gauteng over the past weekend during a sweeping crime-prevention operation led by the South African Police Service.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the multidisciplinary law enforcement team conducted the latest phase of Operation Shanela between 26 and 28 September 2025.
“The police in Gauteng continue to sweep clean the streets of Gauteng and remain resolute in dealing with any criminal activities while stamping the authority of the State,” Nevhuhulwi said.
She confirmed that 1,567 suspects were arrested for various offences including drug dealing, possession of stolen property, contravening the Immigration Act and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The operation was carried out simultaneously in all five districts of the province and included several crime prevention measures.

“Several crime prevention actions were executed, including strategically mounting roadblocks at problematic roads, stop and searches, liquor compliance inspections, patrols, and vehicle checkpoints,” Nevhuhulwi explained.
Of those arrested, 1,378 were wanted suspects linked to serious and violent crimes such as murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause bodily harm, rape, robberies and hijackings.
“In addressing crimes committed against women and children, the team also arrested 180 suspects on gender-based violence related crimes,” she added.
Nevhuhulwi said the suspects are expected to appear in various magistrates’ courts from 29 September 2025, while some have already been released after paying fines.
She urged the public to continue working with the police to curb crime.
“The public is urged to continue working together with the police in the fight against crime by reporting any criminal activities on the Crime Stop Hotline at 08600 10111 or anonymously give tip-offs on the MySAPS App which can be downloaded on any smartphone,” Nevhuhulwi said.
