Pietermaritzburg – A serious collision on the R33 near Copesville left two cash-in-transit (CIT) security guards, two women, and two children, including a 19-month-old infant, seriously injured on Tuesday afternoon.
One of the women later succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital.
The accident occurred just before 2pm when an armoured CIT vehicle collided with a Toyota Avanza.
Mi7’s Emergency Medical Services responded immediately, working alongside other paramedic services to triage and treat the victims at the scene.
“Paramedics from multiple service providers worked together to triage and treat the patients.
“The two security guards were left with moderate injuries. One of them was entrapped in the wreckage. Pietermaritzburg firefighters, using Specialised Hydraulic Rescue Equipment sponsored by Mi7, worked tirelessly to extricate the guard before he was stabilised and taken to hospital along with his colleague by another service provider,” Mi7 said in a statement.
“From the Toyota, two women aged between 30 and 50 were travelling with a five-year-old girl and a 19-month-old infant. Both children had serious injuries – the five-year-old requiring Advanced Life Support interventions.
“The older female patient was left with serious injuries.”
One of the women, approximately 30 years old, was placed on a mechanical ventilator by Mi7 medics during transport to hospital. Tragically, she is believed to have died from her injuries shortly after arrival. The other woman sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalised.
Mi7 extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a full recovery.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision.
