Cape Town – A tense scene unfolded early on Friday morning at Dinoto Technical Secondary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, when the school’s deputy principal was shot while entering the premises.
According to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), the incident occurred near the school gate as the educator arrived for work. He sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains under medical care.
“When the deputy principal was making his way onto the school grounds,” the department confirmed, “he was attacked outside the school gate and sustained gunshot wounds.”
Police have opened a case of attempted murder and say investigations into the motive and identity of the perpetrator are ongoing.

Despite the distressing incident, the school’s matric learners continued with their National Senior Certificate examinations under heightened security to ensure minimal disruption and maintain a safe environment.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed deep concern and condemned the attack, saying:
“We are deeply shocked by this incident. Schools are meant to be safe spaces for both learners and educators. The department condemns this senseless act of violence in the strongest possible terms. We wish the deputy principal a full and speedy recovery and urge law-enforcement authorities to ensure those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.”
The motive for the attack remains unknown, and no arrests have been made. The shooting has reignited concerns about the safety of school environments across the province and the urgent need to strengthen security measures at educational institutions.
