Cape Town – A Durban Metro Police officer and a motorist were arrested this week after being caught in a bribery exchange that has once again put corruption within traffic enforcement under the spotlight.
The officer was apprehended for allegedly accepting a bribe from a motorist, who in turn was arrested for offering it. Durban Metro Police spokesperson Boysie Zungu confirmed the arrests, saying both suspects would face criminal charges.
Zungu warned that bribery, whether offered or accepted, remains a serious offence.
“We want to remind the public that both parties involved in bribery are guilty in law. The Durban Metro Police Service condemns any form of corruption and will continue to uphold integrity and accountability,” he said.
Both the officer and the motorist are expected to appear in court soon.
The incident follows ongoing efforts by Durban Metro Police to clean up misconduct within its ranks and rebuild public trust. Just this week, the service announced a community outreach drive at Pick n Pay Hyper By-The-Sea, where motorists can settle fines and update details — an initiative seen by some as an attempt to strengthen transparency.
