Cape Town – A well-known seafront restaurant in Hermanus, Burgundy Restaurant in the Western Cape, has sparked backlash after banning dogs from its premises, citing health regulations.
The decision follows a warning from the Health Department and aligns with laws that prohibit animals in areas where food is handled, except for guide or service dogs.
“We regret to inform our loyal patrons that dogs are not allowed at Burgundy restaurant anymore. We apologise for any inconvenience. Burgundy has to comply with and respect this legislation,” the restaurant said in a statement.
The move has divided customers, with some upset and threatening to stop visiting, while others support the focus on hygiene and comfort.
The restaurant said it is “heartbroken,” noting that many regular patrons brought small dogs.
