Klerksdorp – A 36-year-old man has been arrested in Klerksdorp, North West, on charges including drunk driving, resisting arrest, assault of a traffic official and malicious damage to property following an early-morning incident on Saturday.
According to authorities, the incident occurred at about 06:30 on Saturday, 24 January 2026, when traffic officials conducting routine patrols spotted a black sedan driving against oncoming traffic in Leask Street.
“One of the female traffic officials stopped the vehicle and approached the driver, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol,” police said.
Officials further alleged that when the suspect was informed that he was being arrested, “he became aggressive and started attacking the female traffic official.” Male colleagues intervened, but the suspect continued to resist, prompting officials to call in the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“In the process, the female traffic official sustained an injury to her left hand,” police added.
Authorities said the suspect’s alleged violent behaviour continued while he was being transported to a medical facility for blood samples.
“While en route to the health facility, the suspect allegedly struck and broke a window of the traffic vehicle,” police said.
The man was eventually taken to Stilfontein Health Centre, but resistance reportedly continued, leading to his transfer to SAPS Stilfontein, where a blood sample was ultimately taken.
The suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 January 2026.
