Potchefstroom — The South African Police Service (SAPS) in North West has launched an investigation following the discovery of five male bodies at an open-cast mine in Tlhatlaganyane Village, under the jurisdiction of the Sun City Police Station.
A multi-disciplinary team is currently on site gathering information and evidence to determine the cause of the deaths and to identify those responsible.
The area is known for illegal mining activities and has previously been visited by three National Parliament Portfolio Committees on Police, Home Affairs, and Minerals, following complaints from local authorities, including the tribal leadership.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said it is too early to confirm whether the killings are linked to rival mining operations.
“All clues and leads will be investigated, including the identity of the deceased and the reasons for them being on the site before they were shot and killed,” he said.
Authorities have assured the public that the investigation will be extensive and thorough, aiming to ensure that those responsible are apprehended.
No arrests have been made at this stage.
