Johannesburg – A woman was arrested on Saturday, 29 November 2025, after members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) discovered explosives in her possession during a routine patrol along the R511.
According to SAPS, officers from Atteridgeville were conducting crime-prevention operations at approximately 09:00 when they spotted a suspicious Mercedes-Benz Sprinter travelling towards Hartbeespoortdam.
The vehicle was stopped, and the occupants were asked to exit along with their luggage for inspection.
“During the search, our members discovered several explosives and explosive components inside the bag of a female passenger,” the SAPS statement said. “She was unable to provide a valid explanation for being in possession of these items and was immediately arrested.”

The SAPS Bomb Disposal Unit was called to the scene, where the explosives were safely secured and removed. A case docket has been opened, and investigations are ongoing to determine the origin and intended destination of the explosives.
The suspect has been formally charged with illegal possession of explosives, SAPS confirmed.
Major-General Samuel Thine commended the police officers for their quick response. “Their alertness and swift action contributed significantly to public safety. This incident highlights the importance of vigilance during routine patrols,” he said.
Investigations are continuing, and further updates are expected as the case develops.
