Cape Town – A tragic incident occurred in Nothintwa, Ngcwanguba A/A, Eastern Cape, where a seven-year-old boy was shot dead by his eight-year-old cousin using the child’s father’s licensed firearm.
The shooting happened on Thursday, October 2, around 12:45 pm, after the eight-year-old accessed the gun in his father’s bedroom.
Police have opened cases of murder against the eight-year-old and negligence or failure to safeguard a firearm against the 48-year-old father, who has been released on warning and is due in court on October 3.
“Cases of murder and negligence or failure to safeguard a firearm have been opened at Kwaaiman police station after the fatal shooting of a seven-year-old boy,” said police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo.
“The eight-year-old accessed the firearm in his father’s bedroom and pointed it at his cousin, and a shot went off, instantly killing the [child]. A case of murder was opened against the eight-year-old boy, while a failure to safeguard a firearm charge was laid against the 48-year-old father.”
The eight-year-old has been referred to social workers.
