Free State – Police in Thabong are investigating a case of murder after a 25-year-old man died following an alleged mob attack in Phokeng informal settlement on Sunday, 11 January 2026.
The victim was found unconscious with multiple head injuries, reportedly inflicted by members of the community who accused him of stealing copper cables.
He later succumbed to his injuries.
“The victim sustained serious head injuries after being allegedly assaulted by community members,” the South African Police Service (SAPS) said in a statement.

“We are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that may assist our investigations to come forward.”
Authorities have asked members of the public to contact the Thabong Serious and Violent Crimes Unit at 060 985 9276, the Crime Stop Number 08600 10111, or to provide anonymous tips via the MySAPSApp.
Police warned that acts of mob justice are illegal and that all cases will be thoroughly investigated.
