BLIZZARD BASHES SA! – Snow, floods & chaos as wild winter storm slams the nation

Cape Town – South Africans are facing wintry conditions this week due to a strong cut-off low-pressure system and a trailing cold front, resulting in cold, wet, and windy weather, with snowfall in several areas.

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued two orange and six yellow level warnings for various parts of the country.

Key Impacts:

  • Snowfall in multiple provinces, though not in Gauteng as initially forecast.

  • Localised flooding, road closures, icy conditions, and damaging waves are expected.

  • Severe weather warnings include:

    • Orange Level 6: Disruptive rain and flooding in parts of the Eastern Cape, including Buffalo City and OR Tambo.

    • Orange Level 5: Flooding and mudslides expected in Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas.

    • Yellow Level 6: Dangerous snowfall in areas like Joe Gqabi, Molteno, and Matatiele.

    • Yellow Level 2: Snow and rain-related disruptions across several Eastern Cape municipalities; damaging waves from Saldanha Bay to Plettenberg Bay; severe thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal.

Advisories:

  • The cut-off low is forecast to move out of the country via the south-east by Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

  • Small stock farmers and residents in the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal are urged to prepare for very cold, wet, and windy conditions.
