Durban – Fifteen minibus taxi passengers were robbed at gunpoint in Waterloo, KwaZulu-Natal, in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) confirmed that the incident occurred at around 01h25 on Inkosi Johnson Road when a Toyota Quantum carrying mall workers from a late shift was ambushed.
“The taxi was forced into a cul-de-sac by armed suspects travelling in a black Ford Fiesta,” RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram said. “The men opened the doors of the taxi and robbed all 15 passengers of their cellphones and cash.”
According to witnesses, the suspects fired a shot at the driver during the robbery but missed. “A spent 9mm cartridge was recovered at the scene,” Balram added.
No injuries were reported, but victims were left shaken by the attack. “We were just coming from work when they blocked us. They pointed guns and told us to hand over everything. We had no choice,” one passenger told officers.
RUSA members conducted a search of the area shortly after the incident. “Reaction Officers scoured the vicinity in an attempt to track down the suspects, however no arrests have been made at this stage,” Balram confirmed.
The suspects remain at large as investigations continue.
