Cape Town – Stellenbosch University and police are investigating the sudden death of a second-year student, Chris Scheffers, whose body was discovered at Dagbreek Men’s Residence over the weekend.
Scheffers, 19, was studying theology and originally from Riebeek West.
According to EWN, police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said, “Upon arrival, police members were met by the campus security, who took them to the second floor of the residence. The student was lying on his back on the bed. All his personal property remained in place. No foul play is suspected. A post‑mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”
In a statement quoted by News24, the university later confirmed that Scheffers had died of meningococcal meningitis, a bacterial infection that can spread in communal living spaces. The university has started contact tracing and administering preventative treatment to close contacts.
Professor Richard Stevens, acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching, expressed the university’s condolences, “It is with heavy hearts that we mourn with the family and friends of Chris Scheffers. He was a cherished young life in our community.”
Speaking to IOL, Dagbreek residence head Grant Leukes said Scheffers had been involved in student life and was well liked,“He was involved in res and loved the community he stayed in. We will all miss him dearly.”
The university has offered counselling services to students and staff. A memorial service is currently being planned to honour his life.
Police say investigations remain open while awaiting full post-mortem results.
