Cape Town – Knysna High School in the Western Cape is facing public outrage after a video surfaced showing a pupil using the apartheid-era “K-word” in a classroom setting.
The footage has spread widely on social media, drawing strong criticism and prompting an official investigation.
According to The Citizen, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed that disciplinary measures are being taken and counselling has been offered to affected learners. WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said the incident was “deeply hurtful”.
“Racial prejudice and discrimination have no place in any of our schools. The school will now address the matter in terms of the necessary disciplinary procedures and restorative measures.”

As reported by News24, concerns have been raised about whether the school has adequately handled similar complaints in the past.
One former learner told the outlet: “There have been other racist incidents at the school, but victims never received support.” The publication noted that this incident has revived frustrations about racism in South African schools.
The School Governing Body (SGB) will oversee the disciplinary process, while Hammond confirmed that the department would monitor the matter closely.
