Cape Town – The Western Cape High Court has dismissed the EFF’s urgent bid to stop the planned increase in the general fuel levy.
The court ruled against the party on Tuesday, just before the 16 cents per litre increase for petrol and 15 cents for diesel was set to take effect.
In its application, the EFF argued that Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s decision lacked legal and parliamentary backing, citing the Money Bills Amendment Procedure and Related Matters Act.

“The minister is a member of the executive, and us on the legislature side; we are the ones that actually enact and make the laws in the country. So the minister is encroaching on the powers he does not have,” EWN quoted EFF Treasurer General, Omphile Maotwe as saying.
The EFF wanted the levy suspended (Part A) and the minister’s decision reviewed and overturned (Part B), also requesting he pay legal costs.
