Johannesburg – At the recent 2025 Plenary Meeting of the African Forum of Independent Accounting and Auditing Regulators (AFIAAR) on 23 May 2025, the CEO of the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA) was elected to the board of AFIAAR in the office of Vice-Chairman.
Mr Imre Nagy joins the board for a two-year term ending 30 June 2027, and will be supported by Ms Rebecca Motsepe, our Director: Legal as alternate member.
The other Vice-Chairman elected at the meeting was Pius Aloysius Maneno who is the Director General of the National Board of Accountants and Auditors (NBAA) of Tanzania.
The Chairman, Mr Viswajithsing Tuhobol, who was re-elected for a second term, is the CEO of the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of Mauritius.
Established in 2018, the AFIAAR comprises regulators from 17 jurisdictions across Africa.
It serves to promote effective and harmonised regulation, build institutional capacity, and provide a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of regulatory best practices.
The IRBA was a founding member of AFIAAR in 2018 and has not served as a board member since 2020.
Mr Nagy’s return to the board indicates the high esteem in which the IRBA is held not just globally but on the continent.
Mr Nagy was also recently reappointed to the board of the International Forum of Independent Audit Regulators (IFIAR).
Says Admire Ndurunduru, Executive Director of AFIAAR: “These appointments reflect AFIAAR’s commitment to strengthening the regulatory ecosystem for accounting and auditing in Africa.
The collective expertise of the new leadership team reinforces AFIAAR’s mission to enhance investor confidence and build regulatory capacity on the continent.”
Says Nagy: “In particular, it is our goal to strengthen independent accounting and auditing regulators in Africa and support the establishment of these where none exist.
“Over the past few years, the IRBA has been instrumental in assisting Zimbabwe and Namibia which have both adopted our Audit Development Program (ADP) for the training of registered auditors in their respective countries.
Our Inspections team have also assisted the Botswana Accountancy Oversight Authority, and more recently the Kenyan regulator with their inspections methodology.
Our Director: Inspections, Ms Ntlambi Gulwa, chairs the AFIAAR Inspections Working Group.
“This supports the intention to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and information in the accounting and auditing environment and share practical experiences with regards to regulatory activities including through peer learning.
“We look forward to contributing to the AFIAAR Board and remain committed to regulatory collaboration and will continue to support independent audit regulation across the continent.”
