Johannesburg – The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has raided the luxury Sandhurst property of businessman Hangwani Maumela, seizing high-end vehicles, designer furniture, and valuable artwork as part of an R820 million asset recovery operation linked to the Tembisa Hospital looting scandal.
The Thursday morning operation, executed under a Special Tribunal order, forms part of a broader crackdown targeting corrupt officials and syndicates that siphoned over R2 billion from the hospital through fraudulent procurement schemes.
Maumela, whose companies secured lucrative government contracts across Gauteng and other provinces, is allegedly tied to the Maumela Syndicate, one of three major groups orchestrating the theft, reports said.

Funds meant for healthcare were diverted via thousands of irregular purchase orders, often with no goods delivered.
According to IOL, the SIU is pursuing R300 million in forfeiture cases against Maumela and associates, with investigations revealing a complex network of politically connected suppliers.
The interim SIU report describes the scandal as a “devastating plunder of public funds,” betraying public trust and harming vulnerable patients.
Maumela’s entities were also flagged in the late Babita Deokaran’s forensic report, which implicated 14 of his companies in contracts worth R415 million.
