A critical window of opportunity
2025: South Africa is poised to transform its energy landscape, and the Energy Council of South Africa is recognised as a leading force for positive change.
With Government objectives firmly outlined under the legal frameworks of the Electricity Regulation Act (ERA) amendment and Climate Change Bill, our national ambition is clear.
As we continue to build the collaborative delivery partnership with Government, the Council remains focused on mobilising capacity and building investor confidence to support a thriving and sustainable energy sector.
As a CEO-led organisation, the Energy Council unites businesses in electricity, liquid fuels, and gas, serving as a trusted partner to Government. We have developed a delivery strategy, supported by members and approved by the Board, that prioritises actions to drive progress and support Government’s reforms.
Uniting for progress
We remain technology-agnostic, uniting members from a broad spectrum with the commitment of supporting national energy reforms. Launch of the SAWEM along with Grid expansion and modernisation are two priority focus areas that are moving quickly and will unlock a new wave of investment opportunity.
The partnership between Business and Government led by Business for South Africa (B4SA) continues to yield positive outcomes and business confidence impact. The Energy Action Plan (EAP) and National Energy Crisis Committee (NECOM) were established by Government in response to the loadshedding crisis but have now matured to an expanded work plan and focused delivery model. The Council facilitates broad business participation across multiple workstreams in the revised NECOM 2.0, maintaining strong governance and administration.
Working in partnership will move us from vision to victory, building a competitive, sustainable energy system that drives inclusive growth and benefits all South Africans.
#EnergiseMzansi: Igniting Public Support
The #EnergiseMzansi campaign aims to improve energy literacy across South Africa, demystifying the energy transition and encouraging informed dialogue. We’re driving vital conversations to create awareness of the transition by navigating through 6 toolkits essential to understand not only the structural and systemic challenges ahead, but also the opportunities as we progress our energy transition.
Fuelling Evidence-Based Decisions
The Energy Data and Modelling South Africa (EDMSA) platform revolutionises energy modelling through standardising data sets, simplified and reduced cost of access and open engagement. We have developed a world-first modelling offering in collaboration with Energy Exemplar using their PLEXOS® Cloud and a detailed national energy model.
International Influence
Our World Energy Council (WEC) membership strengthens South Africa’s presence in international energy dialogues. The WEC South Africa Member Committee has been officially launched with diverse representation from the public sector and Energy Council members advancing national priorities.
