Durban – The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has given motorists until 30 November 2025 to switch to the new vehicle licence plate system, warning that failure to do so will result in fines under the National Road Traffic Act.
After the deadline, old plates will be invalid, and driving with them will be considered an offence.
Motorists can visit their nearest licensing offices to update their plates, and those renewing vehicle licences before the deadline will automatically receive new registration numbers.
“Failure to migrate timeously will lead to members of public getting fined as this will become a violation of the National Road Traffic Act,” Berea Mail quoted the department as saying.

The new system was introduced to address the shortage of registration numbers and align KZN with the national vehicle registration system.
SA Trucker reported that the department also advised vehicle owners to update their new licence details with institutions such as insurance companies, banks, financiers, and tracking or fuel card providers to avoid administrative complications.
