Cape Town – South Africa has launched a five-point plan to counter the impact of the 30% US tariff imposed on 7 August 2025.
The strategy includes ongoing negotiations with Washington, with a revised offer — approved by Cabinet — addressing concerns in the US’s 2025 National Trade Estimates Report, particularly sanitary and phytosanitary measures for poultry, blueberries, and pork.
This has led to a breakthrough, with poultry and pork shipments from US states like Georgia, Mississippi, and Alabama set to arrive in two weeks.
South Africa is also weighing tariff cuts in response to EU concerns under the SADC-EU Economic Partnership Agreement, working with the Southern African Customs Union to identify possible adjustments.
