The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has announced changes to fuel prices that will bring relief to petrol users, but diesel drivers will face higher costs.
Price Adjustments:
Petrol (both grades): ↓ 28 cents per litre
Diesel (0.05% sulphur): ↑ 65 cents per litre
Diesel (0.005% sulphur): ↑ 63 cents per litre
Illuminating paraffin: ↑ 32 cents per litre
LP Gas: ↓ 69 cents/kg (↓ 78 cents/kg in the Western Cape)
New Prices:
93 Unleaded Petrol: R21.67/litre
95 Unleaded Petrol: R21.75/litre
Diesel (0.05%): R20.15/litre
Diesel (0.005%): R20.20/litre
Reasons for Adjustments:
According to DMRE spokesperson Robert Maake, the changes are influenced by:
A slight drop in Brent Crude oil prices (from $69.36 to $69.06), due to increased OPEC production and global economic uncertainty linked to potential US trade tariffs.
The rand strengthening against the US dollar (from R17.84 to R17.76), which lowered petrol prices by 4–5 cents per litre.
A positive fuel account balance of R3.707 billion at the end of June 2025, keeping the slate levy at zero cents for petrol and diesel.
These adjustments will take effect at midnight on Tuesday, 5 August 2025.
