Cape Town – Motorists in South Africa could face steep fuel price increases in April, with petrol potentially rising by about R3.60 to R4 per litre and diesel by R6.63 to R6.75 per litre, according to the Central Energy Fund’s latest analysis.
The data shows large under-recoveries, meaning current pump prices are lower than what they should be based on international oil prices and the rand-dollar exchange rate. Illuminating paraffin could also increase sharply by about R8.53 per litre.
Rising global oil prices, linked partly to tensions in the Middle East and concerns about supply through the Strait of Hormuz, are the main drivers of the expected increases.
However, the final fuel price adjustments will only be confirmed at the start of April.
