Johannesburg – Passengers at OR Tambo International Airport faced temporary flight delays on Sunday, as Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) SOC Limited reported operational disruptions due to human resource constraints at the airport’s Air Traffic Control station.
In a statement, ATNS acknowledged the delays and assured the public that measures were being taken to stabilise operations. “We are aware of the flight delays currently being experienced at OR Tambo International Airport,” the organisation said.
The delays, ATNS explained, are the result of temporary staffing shortages affecting the Air Traffic Control station. “Contingency measures have been implemented and additional resources are being deployed to stabilise operations,” ATNS said, adding that these interventions are expected to resolve the situation today and progressively restore normal service levels.
Safety remains a priority, the agency stressed.

“Safety remains our highest priority, and ATNS continues to work closely with airlines and airport partners to minimise disruptions and ensure the safe and efficient movement of air traffic,” the statement read.
ATNS also issued an apology to travellers for the inconvenience.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank travellers and operators for their patience and cooperation,” the statement said.
Airline operators at OR Tambo confirmed that some flights experienced delays ranging from 30 minutes to over an hour, though no cancellations were reported as of Thursday afternoon.
Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for real-time flight updates as ATNS continues to manage the situation.
