Cape Town – Electricity tariffs in South Africa will increase by an average of 8.76% from 1 April 2026, following approval by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa.
Eskom says the hike is necessary to maintain the electricity system and ensure reliable supply, despite acknowledging affordability concerns.
Households are expected to face higher monthly bills, while municipal customers may see different increases depending on local tariffs.
“We have been clear in communicating that Eskom is working to ensure that future tariff increase requests remain reasonable, recognising the affordability pressures on both residential and business customers,” said Calib Cassim, Eskom’s group chief financial officer.

Community groups have raised concerns about the financial pressure on consumers and are calling for clear communication from municipalities.
NERSA maintains the increase is needed to support long-term sustainability and investment in electricity infrastructure.
