Cape Town – Discovery Health has announced it will cover the costs of a claims system error that led to the overpayment of certain Above Threshold Benefit (ATB) claims in 2025, relieving affected members of any repayment obligations.
The error impacted 16,507 members across selected Executive, Comprehensive and Priority plans, accounting for about 10.5% of members on those plans and less than 0.6% of Discovery’s total membership.
Discovery CEO Ron Whelan apologised, saying the scheme had decided to absorb the costs after considering members’ concerns.
“Notwithstanding the validity of the recovery, having carefully listened to members’ concerns and considered their individual experiences and circumstances, Discovery Health has decided to cover the cost on members’ behalf,” Whelan said.

“We apologise unreservedly to members affected by this error. Covering this cost is the right decision, one that reflects our commitment to fairness, integrity and putting members first, especially when we fall short,” he added.
All affected claim statements will be updated, any deductions reversed, and members who already repaid will be refunded in full.
