Johannesburg – The South African Department of Transport has proposed a new toll plaza near the Beitbridge Border Post, the country’s busiest crossing with Zimbabwe, and has invited public comment on the plan until 19 September 2025.
According to BusinessTech, SANRAL recommended the toll under national road legislation, covering a 1.1 km stretch of the N1 and surrounding areas on the South African side.
The border post handles thousands of people and hundreds of trucks daily, linking South Africa to Zimbabwe and other SADC countries.
A 2018 R4 billion upgrade improved traffic flow and security, reducing freight delays from several days to just hours.

Currently, tolls for southbound traffic are collected by Zimbabwe, but the proposal would shift collection to the South African side, with location and payment methods to be determined, the report said.
“The toll may be collected within the Border Post Area or at another location that will be best suited taking into consideration all the border post activities that are currently or may in future take place within the border post area as well as the method of payment,” the report was quoted as saying.
According to The South African, upgrades have improved traffic flow, reduced congestion, and strengthened security, allowing 24/7 operation with up to 300 trucks crossing daily — down from week-long delays previously, the report said.
Currently, southbound tolls are collected by Zimbabwe, but a proposed new toll plaza on the South African side will shift collection locally, with public comments open until September 2025.
Earlier in 2025, tolls along the N1 “Platinum Highway” increased by 4.8%, now totaling R197 for the Limpopo route.
