Cape Town – South African comedian Marc Lottering and his partner Anwar McKay have spoken about their shocking experience surviving a powerful cyclone while on holiday in Mozambique.
The couple were spending Valentine’s weekend at Tofo Beach in Inhambane province when Cyclone Gezani struck, bringing destructive winds and large waves that left a trail of devastation across parts of Mozambique and Madagascar.
Posting on social media just hours before the storm hit, McKay tried to keep the mood light despite the ominous weather. “It’s my first cyclone. If you don’t hear from me again…” he said in a clip filmed at the seaside villa, as winds howled in the background.
Lottering shared his own humorous yet tense reaction to the approaching storm. “Look at my face, man. Done with jokes. Wondering if that was my last poached egg,” he wrote in another post. “I was in complete denial because in my head cyclones happened on CNN in faraway places, to other people. Well, the penny should have dropped that I was indeed in a faraway place!”
Despite the frightening situation and severe damage to their rented house which forced them to move into a hotel the couple confirmed they were safe and unharmed. “Grateful to be alive and safe,” McKay added in his caption.
