Cape Town – South African comedian Leon Schuster has opened up about his struggles with depression and loneliness in a new KykNET documentary titled Schuster.
The 74-year-old, famous for his prank and comedy films like You Must Be Joking, Oh Schucks, I’m Gatvol, and Mr Bones, revealed that he battles chronic depression, especially on Sunday evenings.
He shared that he tries to surround himself with family to avoid feeling isolated.
“On Sunday evenings when the sun goes down, I get depressed. This is why I try as much as possible to have my kids visit me on a Sunday, having a braai that continues until I go to bed,” said Schuster.
“You look for company, you don’t want to be alone. If no one visits me, I sit on my stoep and think about life, which is not a good thing. One should be busy.”
Schuster also admitted that his biggest fear is growing old alone, as he currently lives without a partner.
He was previously married to Lalie, with whom he shares four children and several grandchildren.
In recent years, Schuster has faced serious health challenges, including chronic back pain and periods of immobility.
