Limpopo – A 25-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly disrupting the voting process at Mogoboya Voting Station in Limpopo’s Mopani District during the local government elections on Wednesday.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the woman was arrested on 4 November 2026 after allegedly attempting to take photographs and record a video while casting her vote.
According to police, the presiding officer informed the woman that taking photographs and recording videos during the voting process was prohibited by law.
However, she allegedly became aggressive and hurled insults at the presiding officer using vulgar language, before causing a disturbance that disrupted voting and hindered the Electoral Commission (IEC) from carrying out its duties.
“Police were called to the scene and swiftly intervened, leading to the arrest of the suspect for contravening the Electoral Act 51 of 1996, relating to wilfully hindering or obstructing the Electoral Commission in the performance of its functions or duties,” SAPS said in a statement.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Lenyenye Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 6 November. Investigations are continuing.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers condemned the incident, warning members of the public against behaviour that undermines the integrity of the electoral process.
“The right to vote comes with a responsibility to respect the laws governing elections and the officials entrusted with ensuring a free, fair and credible process,” said Scheepers.
“Any conduct intended to intimidate election officials, disrupt voting or obstruct the Electoral Commission in carrying out its mandate will not be tolerated.
“Police will continue to act decisively against anyone who threatens the integrity and smooth running of the electoral process,” he added.
