Cape Town – A 38-year-old TikTok content creator has been arrested in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal, for allegedly inciting violence and insulting provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in a video posted on social media.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the arrest on Sunday, 1 November, after the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Task Team launched an investigation into the controversial video.
The suspect allegedly accused Mkhwanazi of doing nothing while protesters were being brutalised by police officers during demonstrations. He also allegedly directed explicit and insulting language at the provincial commissioner.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said investigators identified criminal elements in the video, prompting the task team to open a case.
Heightened political and security tensions
“After realising that the suspect’s TikTok rant contained criminal elements of crime injuria and incitement to violence, the KZN Provincial Task Team opened a case for investigation,” Netshiunda said.
He added that the suspect was traced to Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, where he was arrested.
The arrest took place at the MK Party’s final election rally ahead of special voting, which was attended by thousands of supporters and featured an appearance by party leader Jacob Zuma.
Netshiunda also confirmed the suspect was expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 2 November.
The arrest comes amid heightened political and security tensions in KwaZulu-Natal, with police maintaining vigilance ahead of the local government elections.
The suspect’s identity has not been disclosed, and the allegations have yet to be tested in court.
