Taylor Park – Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward 14 candidate Thulani Mbana has been shot dead outside his home in Zamdela, Free State, as police investigate whether the killing was politically motivated ahead of the local government elections.
Mbana was fatally shot at Taylor Park on Monday evening, 26 October, after two unidentified men allegedly approached his residence and called him outside.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident happened at about 21:40. When Mbana approached the men, one of the suspects allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot him several times at close range.
The suspects fled on foot, while Mbana died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
“The motive for the killing has not yet been established, and it has not been confirmed whether the incident is politically motivated,” police said.
Free State police commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia has activated the Zamdela Trio Task Team and the Serious Organised Crime Unit to investigate the killing and track down those responsible.
Police said investigators were pursuing all possible leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the murder.
The killing comes as political parties prepare for the upcoming local government elections, raising questions about the safety of candidates and campaigners. However, police have not established a link between Mbana’s political activities and his death.
Lesia said criminality and violence would not be tolerated as the province prepares for the elections.
The Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (ProvJOINTS) said it was ready to coordinate security measures to support peaceful and safe elections across the Free State.
The SAPS reiterated its commitment to enforcing the law impartially and protecting communities.
Police have urged anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information that could help identify the suspects to come forward.
The investigating officer, Captain Sandile Dladla, can be contacted on 082 453 6245 or 073 226 6788. Information can also be provided to Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or anonymously through the MySAPS app.
Police have cautioned the public against sharing unverified claims or speculation on social media, warning that this could compromise the investigation.
